Spring Hill Dance Company

Code of Conduct

Purpose: The purpose of the Spring Hill Dance Company is to provide students with an opportunity to participate in an activity and to develop and maintain sportsmanship, character, and competitiveness in a positive and encouraging environment.  That being said, participating in this dance company is a privilege.  As a member of the dance company, you represent SHHS Dance Program, the SHHS community, and the District Five community.  Your actions and decisions in the classroom, on the stage, and around the community should not deviate from the regulations and code of conduct set forth in this document.  SHDC dancers must show respect, responsibility, positivity, and safety in their actions and decisions in order to be a productive member of this company.

*Failure to meet/uphold any and all of these expectations will result in immediate removal from the Spring Hill Dance Company.

SHDC dancers and parents…

Must be RESPECTFUL.

  • Behavior

    • Appropriate behavior is expected of the dancers during rehearsals, performances, and other dance team events.

    • Appropriate behavior is expected of the dancers outside of dance company events as you are always representing SHDC and SHHS as a whole.  This includes social media.

    • The coach will always be respectful of the dancers, therefore the dancers must always be respectful of the coach, no matter what.

    • Dancers are expected to do what the coach tells you.  If you have a problem about a decision the coach makes, always feel free to come to the coach and ask, but do not expect the coach to change their decision.

    • Parents may reach out to the coach about decisions for explanations, but understand that the coach makes decisions for the benefit of the entire team and not one dancer.  There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes and parents need to trust that the coach will always make decisions that are in the best interest of the team.

    • If a dancer receives ISS more than once, then the dancer will be removed from the team.  If a dancer receives OSS at any point, the dancer will be removed from the team.

  • Language

    • Respectful language is expected at all times.

    • Supportive comments only to your teammates.

    • Do not talk back to the coach.  Sometimes the coach might make decisions that you don’t like or don’t understand.  Attitudes never get anyone anywhere.

  • Performance Etiquette

    • Etiquette from dancers and parents is mandatory at all performance events.

    • SHDC dancers never knock each other down and they definitely do not knock other teams or performers down.

    • SHDC dancers will respectfully applaud other performers every time, even during awards.

    • SHDC dancers will not talk or behave inappropriately during other performances.

Must be RESPONSIBLE.

  • Grades

    • SHDC dancers need to maintain an average of 80 or higher in every class at all times.  Emails will be sent out to teachers regularly and grades will be checked throughout the season.

  • Time Commitment

    • Dancers need to be punctual to all practices, rehearsals, performances, and events.

    • All dancers attending and getting to rehearsals, performances, and other events in a timely manner is essential to success for the team as a whole.

  • Communication

    • Turning in paperwork or doing tasks on time is essential so that the coach is able to promptly plan and get things done.

    • Dancers are expected to stay on top of their own assignments and not rely on parents to complete tasks.

    • If an issue or schedule conflict arises, dancers are expected to come to the coach AHEAD of time so that the coach can plan accordingly and properly prepare the rest of the team.

  • Fundraisers

    • There will be several events throughout the season that all dancers are expected to participate in so that the team can raise money for choreography, props, and anything else the program might need.

    • If a dancer does not attend a fundraising event, the dancer will be financially responsible for whatever the fundraiser was supposed to cover.

  • Absences

    • All practices, competitions, and performances are MANDATORY. Arriving more than 30 minutes late or leaving more than 30 minutes early will constitute an absence.

    • A dancer is allowed a total of 5 excused absences absences (family emergencies, academic requirements, illnesses) and 3 unexcused absences (all other absences) from event/practices throughout the entire season. Mandatory attendance to a school event that is GRADED will be considered an excused absence.

    • An absence is only excused if the coach is notified with written documentation of the reason for the absence.

    • If a team member exceeds all of the available absences, the coach reserves the right to dismiss the member from the team. No refunds will be given if a student is dismissed from the team due to absences.

    • Dancers are responsible for learning all material they missed during an absence on their own time BEFORE THE NEXT PRACTICE.  If the dancer does not know the material they missed, they will be removed from that section of the dance or the dance entirely.

  • Tardies

    • Arriving fewer than 30 minutes late or leaving fewer than 30 minutes early constitutes a tardy.

    • Parents should ensure that students are picked up promptly at the end of practice. If a student is picked up more than 30 minutes late, then the student will receive a tardy.

    • Three tardies will constitute one absence.

  • Practice

    • SHDC dancers need to take the initiative to practice outside of rehearsals and team practices. The coach will be able to tell if you haven’t practiced!

    • Your teammates are counting on you to do your part and know the routines.

    • If dancers have not practiced outside of rehearsal and the dance is not performance-ready, the coach reserves the right to pull the dance or the dancers from the performance.

    • All dancers will be expected to take the company dance class. Discuss scheduling conflicts with Coach Snow ASAP.

    • Missing a practice the week of competition or a performance will result in the dancer not being able to perform.  No refunds will be given during this circumstance.

  • Performances

    • On your performance schedule, there will be an arrival time listed and an estimated performance time.

    • Dancers must be at the event by the ARRIVAL TIME, not the performance time.

    • Dancers must arrive dressed and ready as specified by the coach.

    • Forgetting costumes, makeup, shoes, etc. will be documented and there will be consequences.

Must be POSITIVE.

  • Team

    • SHDC dancers must always be positive and uplifting to one another. Offering words of encouragement will go a long way.

    • SHDC dancers must always be positive and uplifting to YOURSELF. You will always be your own biggest critic, but you also need to always be your own biggest cheerleader. Give yourself some credit.

  • Issues

    • If problems arise with other teammates, the coach needs to know about them immediately when they happen in order to resolve the issues. COMMUNICATION IS KEY.

    • Dancers need to try to be their own advocates when it comes to communication with the coach. Try to start good habits of YOU reaching out to the coach, not your parents, when things happen.  Parents are welcome to reach out to the coach as well, but high school dancers need to start practicing responsibility.

Must be SAFE.

  • Injuries

    • Injuries are sometimes unpreventable, but dancers need to make responsible decisions (Ex: NO HIWIRE) to prevent injuries during the season so as not to let the rest of the team down.

    • If a dancer becomes injured or think they might have been injured, they need to notify the coach immediately.  Hiding injuries from the coach or from parents will do so much more harm and could take you out for the rest of the season instead of a few weeks.  Do not let the team or yourself down by not getting help with injuries.

  • Rehabilitation Schedule: If injury occurs which results in the dancer being unable to participate in 1 or more practices...

    • Within 1 week of a regular season performance - the dancer will not perform.

    • Within 2 weeks of a competition - the dancer will not compete.

    • Within 4 weeks of a competition - the dancer may compete if the coach deems the dancer performance-ready and the injury is properly rehabilitated.

  • Distractions

    • There will be a closed door policy at ALL rehearsals.  Dancers will be more focused without the presence of parents, siblings, and friends.  Thank you for understanding.

  • PARENTS

    • It is so important that rides for dancers are prompt to and from rehearsals and performances.

    • The dancers need time to warm-up and stretch before they jump into dancing so they do not get injured.

    • Please work out transportation in advance for your dancer so that they will not be stressed out and so they will not be penalized.

CONSEQUENCES: Failure to follow the SHDC Code of Conduct may result, but is not limited to the following actions:

  • Sitting out of a practice, performance, or team event.

  • Probation from the team.

  • Removal from the team. - The coach reserves the right to dismiss any SHDC member from the team at any time. If a dancer is removed from the team, refunds will NOT be given if the funds have been spent.
